3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 The NCFR Resource and Referral Center, under the direction of Margaret Bodley, began functioning at headquarters, funded by a grant from the Stewart Mott Foundation. The Center—far ahead of its time as a database—was established to accomplish the following tasks: (1) collect, index, and store and retrieve family-related information for professionals in the family field and interested others throughout the country; (2) help with program planning and assessment in schools, colleges, churches, and government and community agencies; (3) supply appropriate references for those wanting reliable materials; and (4) suggest speakers on special topics.

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 Sharon Alexander also testified for the NCFR White House Conference Hearings in Washington, addressing four issues: (1) government involvement in the family system, (2) amelioration of family violence, (3) needs of special families, and (4) family life education.

7 Leave a comment on paragraph 7 0 President Jimmy Carter created an Office for Families within the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

8 Leave a comment on paragraph 8 0 Ann Tourigney wrote a policy statement, “Hospital Care Cost Containment,” which was accepted by NCFR. NCFR also established an official policy that it would meet only in the states that supported the Equal Rights Amendment as long as the issue was viable.

9 Leave a comment on paragraph 9 0 Kinsey Green, Executive Director of the American Home Economics Association and a representative of the Coalition of Family Organizations (COFO), of which NCFR was a member, testified in Congress to the House Subcommittee on Select Education in support of the Domestic Violence and Services Act. COFO also participated in a national task force on family violence, along with the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration; the U.S. Department of Justice; the Office of Domestic Violence; the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; the national Executive Service Corps; and the Advertising Council.
