1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The Counseling Section changed its name to the Family Therapy Section and voted to set up an award to recognize outstanding articles on family counseling, research, or theory and to recognize outstanding presentations in the Counseling Section’s annual conference programs.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 The International Section established its purposes as threefold: (1) to promote international research on families, (2) to facilitate communication among international family scholars, and (3) to foster a better understanding of family-related developments throughout the world.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 David  Baptiste was elected  by the Black Caucus and then appointed by the Board President to serve as liaison between the Caucus and the Board.  Note that instead of the name Black Caucus the term Ethnic Minority Standing Committee was substituted. At the February Board Meeting, Baptiste made several requests on behalf of the Ethnic Minority Standing Committee, including the following:

  • standing representation on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Marriage and the Family and  Family Coordinator;
  • standing representation on the committees of the annual meeting program, nomination, membership, and publications; and
  • increased opportunities for input/participation in the planning of annual meetings, especially the selection of plenary speakers.Charles WillieCharles Willie

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 The Board assessed each member of the group a $3.00 section dues, allowed space on the annual program, and approved the provision of a chair for a 2-year tenure. At the Annual Conference, a “Minority Section” was listed on the program. Dr. Charles V. Willie was invited as a plenary speaker, and Dr. William Wilson from the University of Chicago was the discussant. A newsletter was published  by David Baptiste, including information regarding the first Board meeting of the new section.

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 Focus groups launched the year before began considering the following interest areas: aging, adoption, divorce, family and health, family law, impact of variant family forms on children, middle years, minority members, optional parenthood, economics and the family, displaced homemakers, and marriage and family enrichment.
