Other Activities in 1983–84

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The Public Policy Committee reported in December 1983 on two initiatives in Congress to address the needs of families: (1) The Family Protection Act and (2) the activities of the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families. A survey of public policy issues revealed strong NCFR member support for ensuring timely child support payments, requiring high school students to take a course in family life education, and development of a catastrophic illness insurance program and tax incentives for families caring for elderly or handicapped members. The NCFR Board voted to accept recommendations by the Family Action Section and the Public Policy Committee that papers should be commissioned for three of the four issues cited.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 The CFLE Implementation Committee published Standards and Criteria for Certification of Family Life Educators, College and University Curriculum Guidelines, and Guidelines for Family Life Education Programs Over the Life SpanAn Overview of Family Life Education and a Framework for Planning Life Span Programs: Recommendations also became available. The committee also sought proposals from Trinity College, Austin, TX, and ETR, Palo Alto, CA, for providing continuing education for CFLEs.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 John Theban, CEO of Child and Family Services, Family Service America, testified before the Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, representing the Coalition of Family Organizations (COFO). COFO urged the Select Committee to focus on the need for a comprehensive, well-integrated service system to meet the needs of families.

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 NCFR again promoted National Family Sexuality Education Month, an idea conceived by Sol Gordon of Syracuse University in 1975. The Planned Parenthood Federation undertook the effort to build support for National Family Sexuality Education Month and has built a national coalition of organizations. Linda Simkin was NCFR representative to the Coalition.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 Mary Jo Czaplewski, former Associate Dean of the College of Professional Studies & School of Home Economics at University of Wisconsin—Stevens Point, and President of the Wisconsin Council on Family Relations, became the Executive Officer of NCFR in July 1984. Also in June 1984, NCFR moved its offices from Minneapolis, MN, to St. Paul Minnesota, MN, on County Road B, to gain greater space.
