2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 The Fifth Annual Policy Conference was jointly sponsored with AAFCS and NCFR in Washington, DC, on April 1 and 2, 2004. The theme was “Families at the Crossroads,” and it focused on the four issues of Medicare, education, health care, and the economy.  The recipient of the NCFR Special Services to Families Award was Rep. Dennis DeFazio (D-OR) for his work with military families.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 In the wake of Margaret Feldman’s retirement and move back to Ithaca, NY, NCFR opened a policy office in Washington, DC, at the Instate Natural Gas Association of America.

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 An Emerging Leadership Training Institute was held on November 19 in conjunction with the Annual Conference. Led by Norma Burgess and Maxine Hammonds-Smith, it was designed to provide insights into individual career choices and commitments and potential for professional career growth and leadership. Four topics were covered: (1) Valuing Self-Leadership, (2) Leadership Styles, (3) Personal NCFR Roles, and (4) Professional Purpose.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 A Same-Sex Marriage fact sheet was approved by the Board, with some editorial changes. A policy brief on military families entitled “Building Strong Communities for Military Families” was published and presented at a briefing session on Capitol Hill as well as being sent to national, state, and local policymakers in the country.

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 CFLE Director Dawn Cassidy and Executive Director Michael Benjamin worked with Halsey-Raines Inc. and the U.S. Department of Labor to have the certification listed in the national directory of occupations. The CFLE newsletter, Network, increased the number of pages to 16 and was now published in two colors. It included content articles and paid ads. The sales of the Family Life Education: Integrating Theory and Practice book sold out at 1,250 copies, raising $12,700. A second printing was done. The CFLE publication Pathways to Practice: FLE Internship/Practicum Handbook was also published in 2004.

7 Leave a comment on paragraph 7 0 Two long-time members of NCFR passed away: Evelyn Rouner (March 5, 2004) and Ethel Pickett (May 26, 2003). Ethel was co-founder and editor of the New Jersey Council on Family Relations and one of the first to apply for CFLE certification.

8 Leave a comment on paragraph 8 0 A new NCFR publication: Vision 2004—a compilation of essays on marriage by members and presentations from the 2003 Annual Conference—was published. The focus was on research and best practices.

9 Leave a comment on paragraph 9 0 In mid-September, NCFR received  a grant from the Administration of Children and Families for $4.5 million to develop and operate the Healthy Marriage Resource Center, a clearinghouse and national repository on healthy marriages. Partners in this venture were Brigham Young University, Norfolk State University, Syracuse University, Texas Tech University, the University of Minnesota, and Child Trends. These regional centers would help edit resources, archive, and organize online the information on marriage. An award was presented at a special ceremony at the University of Minnesota by ACF Director Wade Horn.
