Journals and Publications in 1998–99

A contract was signed with Allen Press of Lawrence, KS, for 3 years for editorial management in which NCFR was guaranteed 85% net surplus and Allen would take 15% with a guarantee of a minimum of $200,000. This move allowed NCFR to decrease staff by 3.5 full-time employees and save the organization money. Robert Milardo was completing his term as Editor of the Journal of Marriage and the Family. Journals and Publications in 1997–98

A special task force was led by Timothy Brubaker for the purpose of studying the NCFR report to determine whether it should be outsourced and to discuss new and better content to serve practitioners. The report had been given a new mission statement: “To provide timely, useful information to help members succeed in their roles as researchers, educators, and practitioners. Journals and Publications in 1996–97

A proposal was submitted to the Board for the sale of the NCFR journals to Sage Publishing Co. This came as a result of the Publications Committee’s recommendation to find a publisher who would market and sell the inventory of “other publications.” No publisher out of 11 who received RFPs was interested. Sage, however, wanted to purchase the Journal of Marriage and the Family and Family Relations only. These journals were the primary asset of NCFR, providing 49% of all operational revenue. Journals and Publications in 1995–96

A task force on the Future of the Journals was co-chaired by Alan Booth and Timothy Brubaker. Recommendations given to the Board were as follows: A moratorium was declared on any new publications. Margaret Crosbie-Burnett chaired the committee to look at the cost effectiveness of continuing the Vision 2010 Series and Families in Focus Series. A specific procedure was defined for all focus groups and sections to follow regarding writing, publishing and selling publications. Journals and Publications in 1994–95

A new Editor for Family Relations, effective beginning with the January 1997 issue and ending with the October 2000 issue, was Jeffrey Dwyer, professor and director of the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. The 1995 volume of the Vision 2010 series was Families and Violence. Also, Relationship Violence and Parents, Children and Changing Families was printed that year. The Journal of Family History and Inventory of Marriage and the Family were sold that year. The latter was sold to the National Information Service Corporation of Baltimore, MD.

Journals and Publications and Other Activities in 1993–94

In 1994, an updated edition of Graduate Study in Marriage and Family: A Guide to Master’s and Doctoral Programs in the United States and Canada, edited by John Touliatos, was published (Human Sciences Publications). The International Year of the Family workshop took place this year in Black Mountain, NC, and the International Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing, China.

Membership and Journals and Publications in 1992–93

The Annual Business Meeting was renamed “Business Meeting and Membership Forum.” The rationale was to create more dialogue between the attendees and the Board. Read the March 1993 Newsletter V38 N1 Read the June 1993 Newsletter V38 N2 Read the September 1993 Newsletter V38 N3 Read the December 1993 Newsletter V38 N4 Steve Jorgensen reported that Sharon Price and Jay Mancini had been appointed the new “Series” editors; five new books were published by NCFR, including Vision 2010 Series: Adolescents, by Sharon Price. The search for a new Editor of the Journal of Marriage and the Family began because Marilyn Coleman’s 4-year term was up.

Journals and Publications in 1991–92

Mark Fine, Associate Professor at the University of Dayton, a psychologist and family therapist, was elected the new Editor of Family Relations, starting with the January 1993 issue. Special thanks were extended to Alan Booth and Norma Luebke for their excellent editing of the Journal of Marriage and the Family for an extended 6 years. Marilyn Coleman was elected the next Editor of the journal. The Executive Director reported that the sales of publications other than the journals had netted a total of $108,646. Subsidiary income from royalties, reprints, an advertising brought in an additional $52,511.

Journals and Publications in 1990–91

Timothy Brubaker was editor of Family Relations. Journal subscriptions reported for March 1991 indicated increases over a 5-year period, with the Journal of Marriage and the Family up from 6,770 in 1987 to 7,147 in 1991. Family Relations was up from 4,199 to 5,078 in the same period. John Touliatos of Texas Women’s University graciously volunteered to take over the editorial duties of publishing the Inventory of Marriage and Family Literature without financial support from his university. Journals and Publications in 1989–90

Given the increasing number of new publications published by NCFR, the Board requested that  Executive Director Mary Jo Czaplewski give a full report on all publications of NCFR. Her report, dated November 10, 1990, stated that NCFR’s publications and related services (reprints, royalties, products, advertising) provided 64% of NCFR’s total income. Despite an increased subscription price for both journals, subscribers increased, raising NCFR’s income by 7% above projections. Subscribers to the Journal of Marriage and the Family increased by 1%; Family Relations subscriptions increased by 10%. Other publications were 3% ahead of projections, totaling an income of $87,902.
