Structure and Governance in 1976–77

Plans and approval of the new International Section were completed in order to allow this Section to begin planning its 1978 program. The membership of the Counseling Section reached 978 members. The Advisory Committee, composed of past NCFR Presidents, was reactivated after a long hiatus. In 1977 a proposal to change the name of the NCFR to the Family Relations Council fell 18 votes short of the required 60% of those voting. 1977 Conference: Values, Morals, Ethics, and the American Family

The Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel, San Diego, CA, was the location for the 1977 Annual Conference. Mary Lou Purcell was the program chair and chose “Values, Morals, Ethics and the American Family” as the theme. Nona Cannon was the local arrangements chair. Both President Carter and Vice President Mondale sent greetings. The Congress of Affiliated Councils was responsible for the plenary session, at which Rosabeth Moss Kanter spoke on “Working and Loving in America: Strains, Struggles, and Strategies for Change.” Landrum R. Leadership in 1976–77

William C. Nichols, a consulting psychologist and marriage and family therapist in Birmingham, MI, became NCFR’s 34th President.
