By 1989, the headquarters office on County Road B in St. Paul was too small for the growing staff and activities of NCFR. The lease was not renewed because of a child care service which needed the space. After much searching, and the Board’s decision not to move to Washington, DC, due to cost, NCFR moved to northeastern Minneapolis, at 40th and Central Avenues, and enlarged its space to 3,500 sq. ft. at the cost of $8.50/sq. ft. Sections in 1988–89
A new Section manual was approved at the November 6 Board meeting, drafted by Catherine Gilliss, chair of the Family and Health Section, and Charles Hennon, chair of the Family Action Section. Reports from the Sections of the year’s activities were as follows: Education and Enrichment—Patricia Knaub noted that they were clarifying their role with the CFLE program. This section was growing and had a budget of over $8,000. Ethnic Minorities—Ouida Westney reported that the first Marie Peters Award established by the Section would be awarded to Andrew Billingsley. Affiliates in 1988–89
Chair Susan Meyers reported that the year had been spent building better relationships between NCFR and the Affiliated Councils and that the NCFR video had been circulated among the various Councils, in an effort to recruit more state members to the national association. The Feedback, newsletter of the Affiliates edited by Marilyn Flick, was rescheduled from 3 to 2 times a year. Connie Steele, Affiliated Councils Program Vice President, had planned a training program for the councils. Journals and Publications in 1988–89
Mike Sporakowski chaired the Publications Committee, which was finalizing its search for a new Editor of Journal of Marriage and the Family. Dr. Marilyn Coleman was selected and accepted the role of Editor for a term of 4 years, beginning in January 1991. Dr. Coleman is a professor of family studies at the University of Missouri—Columbia. Alan Booth was applauded for his service as an extended term as Editor. This year, the membership roll was at 3,326 active members. Structure and Governance in 1988–89
In the previous year, the Board began working on a strategic planning process. This year a consulting group, The Stevens Group, led by Pamela Harris, was hired to begin working on a comprehensive strategic plan that would include surveys of members and other groups. This process was begun in April 1989. The Board met with Harris at the new headquarters in Minneapolis. During the year, many meetings were held and research, including surveys, were sent to members.
Leadership in 1988–89
David Olson, new NCFR President, was a professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota for nearly 30 years; a marriage and family researcher and therapist; and founder and developer of the PREPARE ENRICH program of premarital counseling for engaged couples, which became a standard for many churches worldwide. He also took over the publication of The Inventory of Marriage and Family Literature, a compilation of all research on issues pertaining to families which was originally begun by Reuben Hill and Joan Aldous. Sections in 1987–88
Section dues were instituted for the first time at $5.00/Section for all members, except students, who paid $3.00/Section membership. The purpose was to enable the Sections to financially support their conference activities. Also, each Section was to appoint a Student Young Professional Representative to their Section officer roster. A survey of section members indicated strong affiliation in both scholarly research and practice. The Public Policy Committee, chaired by Hal Wallach, requested that the Board supply a part-time paid staff member in Washington, DC, to represent NCFR at the various meetings and coalitions to which NCFR belonged and in which it played a […]
Other Activities in 1987–88
The Family Resources Database (FRD) hired a new director, Dr. Rocky Ralebipi, whose doctorate was in Library Science and Database management. She added descriptor codes to all the data. Four hundred fifty prepaid orders for the 1986 volume of IMFL were collected. NCFR began to do searches for its members at a low cost, and a user manual for the database was written. Contracts were signed with other international database companies, such as BRS, Dialog, and ETSI. FRD staff included Craig Roberts, consultant; Dianne Vigenser, keyer; and Elaine Morrow, proofer. Affiliates in 1987–88
Eileen Earhart was the 1988 President of the Association of Councils, and Sue Meyers was President-Elect. At this time, there were 28 state/local affiliates with 1,652 members. The states represented were AL, CA, FL, Greater Tucson (AZ), HI, ID, IN, KS, LA, MI, MN, MS, MT, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, and WI. Howard Kauffman and Dana Scott began compiling information packets for the affiliates on “How to Solicit Members.”

The 1980 Portland Conference was 12 days after Mt. St. Helen had erupted. There was lots of ash around all over, and I still have a bottle of that ash. That was the year we had an afternoon trip to near Mt. St. Helen’s planned, and still took the trip. On the way up the bus stopped at Crown Point which was typically one of the windiest spots around. The wind was so strong that it blew the name badges out of the plastic holders. It also blew Ruth Jewson, Helen Hartness, and me on top of each other (which was scary for us with Ruth, but she wasn’t hurt). The bus also stopped at Multnomah Falls which was stunning. That evening I played for Bert Adams to sing songs from some musicals. He did a magnificent job.

One of my first NCFR conferences was in Portland and I was still a doctoral student then, and a member of the Executive Committee of NCFR as the student rep. It was at that meeting that I was really thinking about my career and where I should go with it. I was a student in family sociology and my chair was Lee Axelson, then the President of NCFR. He wanted me to take a sociology position. But others suggested that my interests would be better served in Child and Family Development (then in Home Ec) where relationship issues would be easier to study. I did not know which way to go.
At that meeting we took a bus trip to the coast of Oregon for a “salmon bake” on the beach. I sat on the bus between Eleanor Luckey and Ruth Jewson. All the way over and back we talked about career directions and those two people who I respected so much listened to me, and gave me their counsel, experience, and wisdom. Eleanor noted that she had been trained in psychology but chose to go into child and family development since there were more peers there who could help her frame her ideas and help them mature. Ruth saw the emerging scholarship in CFD and the quality of research coming out. The result of that was my turning down sociology jobs and taking the CFD position at UNC-Greensboro, where John Scanzoni and others later joined me a a great department. And my first students there were Jay Mancini and Gary Bowen, who have become successful scholars in their own right.
So the memories of that NCFR in Portland so many years ago remind me of how important it is to continue to foster opportunities for young student scholars to meet with senior people who can give them other ideas, and perhaps bring perspectives that their own programs may not be able to offer. Keep mixing us all up, and recognize the key role you play in the stirring of the creative pots in this vital area of family research and practice.

In 1988-89, I was Association of Councils president-elect. In 1989-90, I was president. There was no vice president. Other officers were program chair, secretary/treasurer, and past president. Both the president elect and the president served on the NCFR Board.
