2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 The 1946 Annual Conference was held April 6–8 at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. The theme was “New Foundations for Marriage and the Family.” The concurrent sessions were all sponsored by the eight special subject area national committees, the precursors to our sections today. The conference itself was cosponsored by 46 other organizations interested in the same goals as NCFR, for example the YMCA/YWCA, Salvation Army, Red Cross, and several colleges. The first day was dedicated to working sessions of each of the eight national committees. These included:

  • Economic Basis of the Family, chaired by Benjamin Andrews
  • Education for Marriage and Family Life in the Schools, chaired by Gladys Groves
  • Education for Marriage in Colleges, chaired by John F. Cuber
  • Education for Marriage and Family life in the Community, chaired by Muriel Brown
  • Marriage and Family Counseling, chaired by Emily Hartshorn Mudd
  • Marriage and Family Law, chaired by John S. Bradway
  • Marriage and Family Research, chaired by Ralph Ojemann
  • Youth Problems, chaired by Janet Fowler Nelson

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 Five concurrent sessions sponsored by each of the above took place all day, culminating in an 8:00 p.m. symposium, led by Sidney E. Goldstein, on the purposes and goals of NCFR in the world.  Conference chairs were Stuart Burgess, Curtis Wilkins, Emily Hartshorn Mudd, and Richard Miller.
