2006 Conference: Unanswered Questions in Marriage and Family Science

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The 68th Annual Conference was held at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency Hotel November 8–11. The theme chosen by program chair Bill Allen and his committee was “Unanswered Questions in Marriage and Family Science.” Local arrangements co-chairs were Jean Anderson and Rose Allen.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 An excellent program was highlighted by the special reception honoring Cindy Winter and her 43 years of service to NCFR. It was co-sponsored by the Hyatt International Hotels honoring Cindy’s work with them over the years. A special program highlighting her life and career, music, a buffet, and fundraiser for a scholarship in her honor were a part of the festive event coordinated by Executive Director Emeritus Mary Jo Czaplewski.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 Plenary speakers included David Walsh, President and founder of the National Institute for Media and the Family, who opened the conference on the topic of “The Third Parent: The Influence of the Media on Family Processes.” Alvin Poussaint, Harvard Medical School, spoke on “Unanswered Questions on the Changing American Family.”

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 The Friday plenary panel on “What If They Threw a Party and All the Boomers Came?” was moderated by Lori Sturdevant, editorial writer and columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, who plied questions and answers from Priscilla Gibson, Arthur Harkins,  and Lee Graczyk.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 Pamela Monroe delivered her Presidential Address on “Unanswered Questions About Poverty” and presented awards.

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 Several well-attended RUPS (Research Updates for Practitioners) and PURs (Practitioner Updates for Researchers) were held. A silent auction that netted over $2,500 supported a transitional home for homeless women, the Theresa Living Center in St. Paul, MN.

7 Leave a comment on paragraph 7 0 The Work/Life Summit 2006 had as its theme Identifying Minnesota’s Untapped Human Capital.” Keynoter speakers were Martha Farrell Erickson, Ton Gillaspy, Sharon Klun, Susan MacHolda, Teresa Hopke, and Vicki Rosenberg. The moderator was Amy Gage of MN/St. Paul Magazine.
