1974 Conference

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The 1974 Annual Conference held jointly with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists in St. Louis, MO, was a record breaker that still stands today, with over 1,700 attending—1,500 of these NCFR members or dual members of both organizations. Gerhard Neubeck was program chair, and Arthur McArthur was local arrangements chair.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 Plenary topics and speakers included “Marriage is for Life,” by Sidney Jourard; “The Key is Empathy,” by Mary Mannes; and “Is Love in Limbo?”, by Laura Singer Magdoff and Sam Magdoff.  Lee Axelson and Clark Vincent gave Presidential Addresses at the banquet, Axelson on “Promise of Illusion: The Future of Family Studies” and Vincent on “Isms, Schisms, and the Freedom to be Different.” Paul Glick, the 1973 Burgess Award recipient, delivered his address on “A Demographer’s View of American Families.” There was also a special session on “Taking the Fear Out of Being Close: Contraception and Intimacy.”

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 The New Music Circle featured the music of Scott Joplin. The pre-conference workshop on Theory Development focused on theory papers in the process of development. Rose Somerville gave a special post-conference workshop on “Family Realities in Fiction and Art.” The Special Emphases Section functioned for the last time, focusing on “Positive Values in Family Life Education Through Ethnic and Cultural Diversity.” A new task force on Aging, with Muriel Brown as chair, held a session on “Be Intimate as Long as You Live,” with about 700 attending.
