2004 Conference: Inequalities and Families

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The 66th Annual Conference took place November 17–20, 2004, at the Rosen Center Hotel in Orlando, FL. Program chair was Jay Teachman. The theme was “Inequalities and Families.” Local arrangements co-chairs were Connie Shehan, Suzanne Smith, and Donna Davis.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 This was the 10-year anniversary of the 1994 UN International Year of the Family (IYF), and special sessions and guests participated. A special session celebrating the anniversary featured several panelists, including Henry J. Sokalski, former Assistant Secretary General of the UN and Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute for Peace and coordinator of the 1994 IYF; Dennis Callagy, UN Office of Vienna (Austria) of the IYF; and M. Janice Hogan, Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota, Chair of the NCFR IYF in Black Mountain, NC, in 1994, and former NCFR President. Their topic was “IYF 1994–2004: Retrospective and Outlook to the Future.” Plenary speaker Timothy Smeeding spoke on “No Child Left Behind? Economic Inequality and Social Consequences for American Kids in Comparative Perspective.”

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 Plenary speakers included Peggy Dilworth-Anderson, who addressed “Inequalities and Health in Later Life: It’s a Family Issue,” with panelists Arland Thornton and Georgina Binstock. Dirgha Ghimire discussed “International Networks, Ideas and Family Change.” Hotelier, Mr. Harris Rosen presented a special session on “The Tangelo Park Pilot Project: Making a Difference in the Community.”

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 The Annie E. Casey Foundation sponsored a public policy seminar and reception on “Inequalities for Some: Privileges for Others.” Panelists were Gary Cunningham, Magungu Akinyela, and Stephen Marks.

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 Sections sponsored many sessions, and the Theory Construction & Research Methods groups met on November 17.
