1982 Conference: Families and Government

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The Annual Conference of 1982 was held at the Shoreham Hotel, Washington DC, October 12–16. Graham Spanier was program chair and chose “Families and Government” as the theme. The entire conference was dedicated to Ruth H. Jewson, in honor of her impending retirement. The American Council of Life Insurance provided a reception.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 A plenary session addressed “The Aging American Family: Implications of the White House Conference on Aging (1981).” About 950 attended the conference. Paul Kerschner, Ellen Winston, Janice Caldwell, and Armin Grams discussed the issue. Wesley Burr’s Presidential Address was entitled “Famology: A New Discipline.” Dorcas Hardy talked about “Families and Government.” Andrew Cherlin gave a master lecture on “Family Policy: The Conservative Challenge and the Progressive Response.” Matilda White Riley presented a master lecture on “Families in an Aging Society.”

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 Several didactic seminars included topics such as, “Personal Computers and the Family” and “Publishing in NCFR-Sponsored Journals.”

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 A special session focused on international issues. Marie F. Peters was interviewed for the Ethnic Minorities Section’s Oral History Project. Poster sessions were a new Annual Conference feature. Former Vice President Walter Mondale and President Ronald Reagan sent greetings.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 There were pre-conference sessions on “Families and the Military,” led by Dennis K. Orthner; “The Creation of Legislation,” organized by Virginia Sibbison; and “Assessment of Family Therapy,” with Ned Gaylin and Eleanor D. Macklin. Charles Cole and Anna Cole led a post-conference session on “Toward Family Wellness.” The Family Action Section sponsored a session on “The Family as a Political Issue.”
