Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The Hyatt Regency Hotel, Dearborn, MI, was the site of the 1986 Annual Conference, November 3–7. Pauline Boss was the Program Chair, and Betty L. Barber was local arrangements chair. The theme was “Family Policy.” Nine hundred thirty people attended.

Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 Five plenary speakers addressed different aspects of the politics of the family, ranging from micro to macro impact. Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Editor of MS Magazine, presented on the topic “Family Politics: Love and Power on an Intimate Frontier.” She had just authored a book on the topic. Augustus Y. Napier, director of The Family Workshop, a treatment and training institute based in Atlanta, GA, delivered an address on “Generation to Generation: The Shaping of Men in the American Family.” Lorraine V. Klerman of the Yale University School of Medicine spoke on “Families and Health Care Politics.” Sen. Sander M. Levin (D-MI) spoke on “The Federal Government and the Future of Families,” and Pi Chao Chen of Wayne State University addressed the issue of “China’s One-Child Policy and Its Likely Socio-Economic Effects.”

Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 A special plenary session dealing with human rights issues was held. Joan Aldous’ Presidential Address was titled “New Views on the Family Life of the Near Elderly and Elderly.” Pre-conference events included Theory Construction and Research Methodology, the Affiliated Council Officers Leadership Training, Marriage Enrichment, and an open forum on “AIDS: The Next Steps.”

Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 The Board sponsored a reception for those attending the conference for the first time.

Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 A special fund-raising event—“Focus on the Future of Families”—also took place. Alice McCarthy of Michigan chaired the event and was moderator. Mike Nobel presented a concert on “Family Songs of Pathos and Fun.” Also on the program were Oscar Remick, President of Alma College in Michigan; Joan Aldous; and Graham B. Spanier, NCFR Fund Development chair.

Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 The International Section offered two sessions in addition to Pi Chao Chen’s Master Lecture: one on political repression and another on “Politics, Polemics, or Potential: The United Nations World Conference for Women and the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Women.”

Leave a comment on paragraph 7 0 The Students andYoung Professionals Section held a Skills Exchange and again sponsored a party for all. Several focus groups held sessions: Farm Families, Family Law, Aging, Marriage and Family Enrichment, Middle Years, Single-Parent Families, Nursing, Remarriage and Step-Parenting; Adoption, Feminism and Family Studies, Work and Families and Family Centers.

Leave a comment on paragraph 8 0 Margaret Arcus of the University of British Columbia led a post-conference workshop on “Politics of Family Life Education,” sponsored by the E&E Section.

Leave a comment on paragraph 9 0 The 1986 conference location was shrouded in some controversy. The NAACP and other organizations were boycotting Dearborn because of its new city ordinance of prohibiting non-Whites from using its parks after dark. The Ethnic Minorities Section and other NCFR members were outraged. In the past, NCFR had adopted a policy of not meeting in states that were against the Equal Rights Amendment. There was talk of us boycotting the meetings. However, this matter was appropriately handled by the Ethnic Minorities Section Chair. Members of the Section used hotel accommodations in Detroit and traveled over to the meetings in Dearborn. There was much discussion about this situation in the NCFR Board meeting after the conference, and the decision was made that in the future the Board would not make decisions that affect the members of any Section without due process.
