1982 Conference: Families and Government
The Annual Conference of 1982 was held at the Shoreham Hotel, Washington DC, October 12–16. Graham Spanier was program chair and chose “Families and Government” as the theme. The entire conference was dedicated to Ruth H. Jewson, in honor of her impending retirement. The American Council of Life Insurance provided a reception. A plenary session addressed “The Aging American Family: Implications of the White House Conference on Aging (1981).” About 950 attended the conference. James Walters, NCFR’s 40th President, served as first Extension Family Life Specialist in the Cooperative Extension Service. He was a professor and head of the department of Child and Family Development at the University of Georgia when he was elected NCFR’s President. He was born in 1925 in Denver, CO. His father and mother were in an automobile accident one month before his birth and his father was fatally injured. The 1983 Annual Conference was held in the Radisson Hotel, St. Paul, MN, October 11–15. Mary W. Hicks was program chair. Jeanne Markell and Kay Louis were local arrangements co-chairs. Structure and Governance in 1982–83
A task force for the Development of a Family Discipline was formed, to promote dialogue about issues associated with the emergence of a family discipline. Wesley R. Burr was elected chair. The Board agreed that it should take stands on public policy issues that affect families, and a process was developed to assist NCFR in doing so, involving the Family Action Section and the Public Policy Committee. Affiliates and Other Activities in 1982–83
Matti Gershenfeld was appointed chair of a Committee on the Development of the Congress of Affiliated Councils. Each Section was asked to appoint a representative to the Family Resource and Referral Center Steering Committee to supervise quality control and to promote the center among the Section constituents. A news release about the Richard Gelles position paper, “How Families with Violent Members Can be Helped,” was sent to 800 organizations. Bert N. Adams (PhD, University of North Carolina) became the 41st President of NCFR. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He has taught sociological theory extensively, both in East Africa and at the University of Wisconsin, and also taught and wrote on the sociology of the family. He is the author of several books, including the introductory textbook The Family: A Sociological Interpretation (5th ed., Harcourt Brace, 1995) and Sociological Theory (Pine Forge Press, 2001). Structure and Governance in 1983–84
The Task Force for the Development of a Family Discipline held an open meeting, with Wesley R. Burr presiding. Two new Sections were established: (1) The Family and Health Section, chaired by William Doherty and (2) the Religion and Family Life Section, chaired by Ruth Jewson. The Commission to Review the Structure of NCFR, chaired by Dennis Orthner, found that NCFR is not as responsive as it once was to the family practitioner–professional. Other Activities in 1986–87
Given the President’s emphasis on fundraising, a special event—“Focus on the Future of Families,” chaired by Britton Wood—was held. It was a one-woman show based on five generations of women from one family. Also, Matti Gershenfeld spoke on “Looking Forward Toward NCFR’s Second 50 years.” During that year, a total of $28,726 in pledges was raised. This was the first of a 5-year fund campaign. Most of those funds went to NCFR Awards endowments. Britton Wood succeeded Graham Spanier as Fund Development chair. 1988 Conference: Addictions in Families
The Annual Conference in 1988 was dedicated to celebrating NCFR’s 50 years of existence. The theme was “Addictions and Families.” Robert Lewis was conference vice president, and the conference was held at the Philadelphia Franklin Plaza Hotel. Ollie Pocs, University of Illinois, chaired the exhibits management. The number of attendees that year increased by 23%, with 52 new members being added from a conference membership/registration package deal. The total attendees numbered 1,100. Journals and Publications in 1987–88
Family Relations, with its new format, cover, and marketing efforts, now had 1,391 subscribers—an increase of 129 over the previous year. The Journal of Marriage and the Family enjoyed a subscribership of 3,591. Both journals began marketing exchange and paid advertising, and as a result the income from paid ads rose to $4,115. New publications included the 50 Year History Book, edited by Ruth Jewson and Jim Walters, and a special issue of Family Relations, entitled “Families in Rural America.” Volume 13 of the Inventory of Marriage and Family Literature was published under NCFR editorship. The 1980 Portland Conference was 12 days after Mt. St. Helen had erupted. There was lots of ash around all over, and I still have a bottle of that ash. That was the year we had an afternoon trip to near Mt. St. Helen’s planned, and still took the trip. On the way up the bus stopped at Crown Point which was typically one of the windiest spots around. The wind was so strong that it blew the name badges out of the plastic holders. It also blew Ruth Jewson, Helen Hartness, and me on top of each other (which was scary for us with Ruth, but she wasn’t hurt). The bus also stopped at Multnomah Falls which was stunning. That evening I played for Bert Adams to sing songs from some musicals. He did a magnificent job.

One of my first NCFR conferences was in Portland and I was still a doctoral student then, and a member of the Executive Committee of NCFR as the student rep. It was at that meeting that I was really thinking about my career and where I should go with it. I was a student in family sociology and my chair was Lee Axelson, then the President of NCFR. He wanted me to take a sociology position. But others suggested that my interests would be better served in Child and Family Development (then in Home Ec) where relationship issues would be easier to study. I did not know which way to go.
At that meeting we took a bus trip to the coast of Oregon for a “salmon bake” on the beach. I sat on the bus between Eleanor Luckey and Ruth Jewson. All the way over and back we talked about career directions and those two people who I respected so much listened to me, and gave me their counsel, experience, and wisdom. Eleanor noted that she had been trained in psychology but chose to go into child and family development since there were more peers there who could help her frame her ideas and help them mature. Ruth saw the emerging scholarship in CFD and the quality of research coming out. The result of that was my turning down sociology jobs and taking the CFD position at UNC-Greensboro, where John Scanzoni and others later joined me a a great department. And my first students there were Jay Mancini and Gary Bowen, who have become successful scholars in their own right.
So the memories of that NCFR in Portland so many years ago remind me of how important it is to continue to foster opportunities for young student scholars to meet with senior people who can give them other ideas, and perhaps bring perspectives that their own programs may not be able to offer. Keep mixing us all up, and recognize the key role you play in the stirring of the creative pots in this vital area of family research and practice.

In 1988-89, I was Association of Councils president-elect. In 1989-90, I was president. There was no vice president. Other officers were program chair, secretary/treasurer, and past president. Both the president elect and the president served on the NCFR Board.
