Other Activities in 1992–93
Executive Director Mary Jo Czaplewski and Margaret Feldman attended the International Union of Family Organizations conference in Vienna, Austria, May 6–9, in connection with the International Year of the Family sponsored by the United Nations. Plans were underway with the leadership of Jan Hogan and Lynda Walters for the NCFR International Year of the Family Workshop to be held in Black Mountain, NC, in July 1994. Theme chosen was “One World, Many Families.” Karen Altergott edited a special publication with that title. She received 13 manuscripts and needed five more to complete the book. Henry K. Other Activities in 1990–91
Margaret Feldman became the NCFR representative to the Coalition of Family Organizations (COFO) in Washington, DC. The Public Policy Committee was headed by Roger Rubin. Three special reports were published using the “family policy framework.” NCFR was a co-sponsor with COFO of several Family Impact Seminars held on Capitol Hill in Washington. A Family Data Project Proposal was also submitted to the Board.
Sections in 1987–88
Section dues were instituted for the first time at $5.00/Section for all members, except students, who paid $3.00/Section membership. The purpose was to enable the Sections to financially support their conference activities. Also, each Section was to appoint a Student Young Professional Representative to their Section officer roster. A survey of section members indicated strong affiliation in both scholarly research and practice. Other Activities in 1984–85
Special gifts from Mutual of America Insurance, Margaret and Harold Feldman, the Congress of Affiliated Councils, and the Minnesota Council on Family Relations enabled NCFR to purchase online services to The Washington Post’s Congressional Tracking System for a year. These services were shared by NCFR, the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and FSA and made it possible for the organizations to obtain information on daily activities and votes of Congress and access all Washington Post articles related to Congressional decision making. Other Activities in 1983–84
The Public Policy Committee reported in December 1983 on two initiatives in Congress to address the needs of families: (1) The Family Protection Act and (2) the activities of the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families. A survey of public policy issues revealed strong NCFR member support for ensuring timely child support payments, requiring high school students to take a course in family life education, and development of a catastrophic illness insurance program and tax incentives for families caring for elderly or handicapped members. Membership and Journals and Publications in 1981–82
Jetse Sprey, Professor of Sociology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, became the new Editor of the Journal of Marriage and the Family. Michael Sporakowski, a professor in the Department of Family and Child Development at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, became the new editor of Family Relations. A special issue of the Journal of Marriage and the Family was published, titled: “Methodology—the Other Side of Caring.” The Journal of Family History also published a special issue devoted to “The Family in Eastern Europe.” Carolyn Love prepared a new Guide to Family Programs, which contained information about 71 U.S. and Canadian degree-granting institutions. Affiliates and Other Activities in 1978–79
By the end of the 1970s, there were 40 state, two provincial, three regional, two local, and two student Affiliated Councils of NCFR. An international seminar on “The Child and the Family” was sponsored at Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota, by the International Section and the Committee on Family Research of the International Sociological Association. The NCFR Resource and Referral Center, under the direction of Margaret Bodley, began functioning at headquarters, funded by a grant from the Stewart Mott Foundation. Other Activities in 1976–77
During this year, the Coalition of Family Organizations (COFO) was formed, consisting of NCFR, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Family Service Association of America, and the American Home Economics Association. This coalition began publishing the COFO Memo, a quarterly newsletter on the major developments in U.S. family policy. It also began serving as a vehicle for each of the four organizations to strengthen their Washington presence through such activities as joint congressional testimony, press conferences, and, eventually, advocacy efforts of major importance. The 1980 Portland Conference was 12 days after Mt. St. Helen had erupted. There was lots of ash around all over, and I still have a bottle of that ash. That was the year we had an afternoon trip to near Mt. St. Helen’s planned, and still took the trip. On the way up the bus stopped at Crown Point which was typically one of the windiest spots around. The wind was so strong that it blew the name badges out of the plastic holders. It also blew Ruth Jewson, Helen Hartness, and me on top of each other (which was scary for us with Ruth, but she wasn’t hurt). The bus also stopped at Multnomah Falls which was stunning. That evening I played for Bert Adams to sing songs from some musicals. He did a magnificent job.

One of my first NCFR conferences was in Portland and I was still a doctoral student then, and a member of the Executive Committee of NCFR as the student rep. It was at that meeting that I was really thinking about my career and where I should go with it. I was a student in family sociology and my chair was Lee Axelson, then the President of NCFR. He wanted me to take a sociology position. But others suggested that my interests would be better served in Child and Family Development (then in Home Ec) where relationship issues would be easier to study. I did not know which way to go.
At that meeting we took a bus trip to the coast of Oregon for a “salmon bake” on the beach. I sat on the bus between Eleanor Luckey and Ruth Jewson. All the way over and back we talked about career directions and those two people who I respected so much listened to me, and gave me their counsel, experience, and wisdom. Eleanor noted that she had been trained in psychology but chose to go into child and family development since there were more peers there who could help her frame her ideas and help them mature. Ruth saw the emerging scholarship in CFD and the quality of research coming out. The result of that was my turning down sociology jobs and taking the CFD position at UNC-Greensboro, where John Scanzoni and others later joined me a a great department. And my first students there were Jay Mancini and Gary Bowen, who have become successful scholars in their own right.
So the memories of that NCFR in Portland so many years ago remind me of how important it is to continue to foster opportunities for young student scholars to meet with senior people who can give them other ideas, and perhaps bring perspectives that their own programs may not be able to offer. Keep mixing us all up, and recognize the key role you play in the stirring of the creative pots in this vital area of family research and practice.

In 1988-89, I was Association of Councils president-elect. In 1989-90, I was president. There was no vice president. Other officers were program chair, secretary/treasurer, and past president. Both the president elect and the president served on the NCFR Board.
